Venetian Snares' latest escapade is a completely unforeseen diversion into
reggae, well, 'Cubist Reggae' at least. This guy clearly sees the world
differently, and when he applies that weltanschauung to his music, you're
almost guaranteed interesting results. And, while this EP is by far his most
accessible, it's also one of his craftiest. 'Ever Apparent All Being Shoulder'
is Snares at his most minimal, swiping away the dense breakbeat acrobatics to
reveal fractal cyber dub fragments and growling black metal vocals, while
'Where You Stopped The Heaviest' is also uncommonly spacious, each flickering
fragment of sound left to linger in the air and viewed like slow-motion
shrapnel in a Wachowski Brothers flick. Occasionally he can't resist a spilling
out into hardcore detonations, like on 'The Identification Circles Levitate'
and to a greater extenet with 'You Discovered The Secret And Juiced It For All
Its Majesty', but they're still not as frantic as we're used to hearing from
him. A major stylistic shift from Mr Snares has been a while coming, and if
anything, it makes up for that weak Speed Dealer Moms EP.
